Restaurant industry supports penalty rates review
Restaurant and Catering Australia (R&CA) has thrown its weight behind Queensland premier, Campbell Newman, who earlier this week called for penalty rate reforms, arguing the extra cost makes it uneconomical for operators to open on public holidays.
R&CA CEO, John Hart, said penalty rates are the reason that half of Australia’s restaurants close on public holidays and about one-third on Sundays.
R&CA has lodged an appeal to a Full Bench of the Fair Work Commission seeking to overturn the decision not to make changes to the to the Restaurant Industry Award.
