The mining industry is pushing for Australia’s anti-discrimination laws to be changed to enable businesses to advertise jobs specifically for Indigenous workers.
Currently, employers have a legal obligation to avoid discrimination when recruiting workers. Each step of the recruitment process should be non-discriminatory and this includes when advertising a position.
Scott Barklamb from the Australian Mines and Metals Association has highlighted that anti-discrimination laws are ambiguous about whether an employer can specifically advertise for an Indigenous person.
