The Victorian Government is responding to the exploitation of overseas workers, and will crack down on shonky labour hire companies. A national response has sparked after an ABCs Four Corners episode aired last week and revealed the agricultural industry has the worst labour hire problem the country has seen in a very long time.
Victoria’s IR Minister, Natalie Hutchins, sent a message to agricultural employers, governing bodies and of course labour hire companies, “we need to be loud and clear that every unethical labour contractor that’s operating needs to know that these activities won’t be tolerated in Victoria.”
Furthermore Hutchins identified that the problem “is not just about the underpayment of wages – this is about creating an underclass of foreign workers. No employee should ever be exploited, harassed or deprived of their basic liberties.”
President Robert van Stokrom of the Recruitment and Consulting Services Association said best practice work environments need to be put in place by employers, hire providers and governments. For change to be experienced the correct employment procedures and obligations need to be followed.
Employsure helps small businesses in Australia by providing them with the correct employment policies and procedures, employment documentation and legal representation so that they are abiding by the Fair Work Act. Employers who are not doing so are at risk of exploiting workers, and may face fines and investigations from the Fair Work Ombudsman.
