Shutting down over the festive season? (Last Updated On: October 3, 2017)

If businesses are planning to shut down across the festive season, now is the time to confirm close dates and notify staff accordingly.

Many Awards and Agreements allow employers to direct staff to take annual leave, or unpaid leave when annual leave has been exhausted during a close-down period. There are however, different requirements under each Award about the minimum notice to provide staff. Below are the Awards that require a two or three month notice period. Other Awards that specify a set notice period can be found on this page.

Three-month notice period.

The below Awards require a two or three month notice period.

  • Airline Operations-Ground Staff Award 2010
  • Meat Industry Award 2010
  • Textile, Clothing, Footwear and Associated Industries Award 2010
  • Joinery and Building Trades Award 2010
  • Plumbing and Fire Sprinklers Award 2010
  • Building and Construction General On-site Award 2010
  • Electrical, Electronic and Communications Contracting Award 2010

This means businesses with employees covered by these Awards must start preparing for the festive season.

It is important to comply with the notice periods as set out in the Award or Agreement. Awards have differing requirements regarding how the notice must be given ie whether notice needs to be provided verbally or in writing; however, in writing either via email or hard copy is best practice.
