Recently, the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) audited specialist food shops across South Australia to ensure employers understood and complied with their workplace obligations.
The FWO reviewed the books of bakeries, poultry and small goods shops, butchers, greengrocers and fruit and vegetable stores in Adelaide and regional South Australia. Out of the 200 businesses that were audited, 43% of employers failed to meet the legislative requirements and were handed a Compliance notice. The majority of employers that contravened had paid staff below the minimum hourly pay rate. This resulted in 285 employees being underpaid a total of $151,789.
The largest recovery of underpaid entitlements was $21,062 from a bakery in Adelaide’s eastern suburbs.
The results of the campaign demonstrates the need for employers to ensure they pay staff accordingly to the applicable award.
