Changes to the Sugar Industry Award – February 2020

What’s Changed In The Sugar Industry Award?
The Fair Work Commission has recently made Sugar Industry Award a number of changes to the Sugar Industry Award 2010 (the Award), including:
- Amending the definition of each sector in the Award, including the field, milling, refinery, distillery and bulk terminal operations definitions
- Moving the definition of ‘seasonal employee‘ to the Types of Employment section of the Award, and specifying that a seasonal employee must be engaged on a full-time or part-time basis
- Confirming that casual employees in the field sector engaged on a piecework basis are entitled to both the casual loading and the piecework loading, with each to be calculated on the minimum hourly rate
- Amending the interaction of the hot work allowance and other allowances payable in the milling, distillery, refinery and maintenance sector
- Introducing a new obligation to provide tools or a tool allowance for apprentice employees in the milling, distillery, refinery and maintenance sector

If you’re a business owner that has employees under the Sugar Industry Award 2010, you must comply with the changes. These changes came into effect on 10 February 2020.
