The Awards Affected by the November 1 Minimum Wage Increase

Earlier this year, the Fair Work Commission (FWC), announced that the minimum wage would increase by 1.75%. However, the minimum wage would only come into effect for some Modern Awards from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2020.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the minimum wage increase would be staggered into three parts, with different Awards receiving the increase on different dates. The Awards were split off into the imaginatively named groups: Group 1; Group 2; and Group 3.

Group 2 will receive its increase shortly, from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 November. This Group consists of 73 Awards and significantly, most, if not all, of the Modern Awards that commonly apply to Construction, Manufacturing and similar Industries are included in this Group.

Group 1 received its increase on 1 July 2020, while Group 3 will receive the minimum wage increase four months after Group 2, from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 February 2021.

What’s the Minimum Wage Increase?

The minimum wage is rising by 1.75%. This increase is uniform across all Groups for all Award Classification levels within an Award.

What Else is Changing?

An increase to minimum wage usually means an increase to paid employee entitlements like weekend and public holiday penalty rates, overtime and allowances.

Whether an employee is entitled to an increased pay of the above and, if so, by how much, is dependent on their applicable Modern Award or enterprise agreement.

Allowances

An employee may be entitled to extra payments due to the nature of their job. This may apply to employees who do certain tasks or have a unique skill, use their own tools and equipment, or work in harsh or dangerous conditions. Employees may also be entitled to a meal allowance when working overtime.

Examples of allowances:

  • Tools and equipment
  • First aid kits
  • Special clothing and uniforms
  • Travel costs (including tolls and fares)
  • Cars and phones provided by the company
  • Costs for working in extreme weather conditions
