Update on Queensland apprentice and trainee changes. (Last Updated On: October 30, 2017)

Employsure clients were sent an email regarding Queensland apprentice and trainee changes in which information around the Fair Work Ombudsman changing its position relating to pay and conditions for some Queensland-based apprentices and trainees was outlined. This issue only impacts a business answering yes to the following four questions:

  1. Does the business employ Queensland-based apprentices or trainees (even if the business is based in another State)?
  2. Is the business a proprietary limited company (ie the business name has ‘pty ltd’ after its name and is not a sole trader, partnership or trust)?
  3. Was the business operating prior to 27 March 2006?
  4. Did the business employ an apprentice or trainee immediately prior to 1 January 2010?

There has been an appeal made to overturn the decision that the modern award applies in determining wage rates for Queensland-based apprentices and trainees. At this stage, the decision is yet to be published, so there is no need to do anything.
