The Fair Work Commission has recently clarified the way some Award provisions apply, and made minor amendments to the Storage Services and Wholesale Award itself.

What are the changes?

  • The year in the Award name has changed from 2010 to 2020, it is now called the Storage Services and Wholesale Award 2020.

  • The Pay Rate Schedule has been updated to reflect the new 2020 version of the Award. Some rates of pay may have changed by one or two cents.

  • The facilitative provision which summarises which clauses can be varied between employer and employee/s has been updated with some additions, but most notably, the travel allowance and electronic funds transfer are no longer allowed to be varied by mutual agreement under this Award.

  • The Award has reinforced that employees who earn above the Award minimum rate must be paid this higher rate when taking annual leave.

  • Casual employees should now be paid the higher rate of pay when they perform 2 or more classifications during a shift. However, they will only be paid the higher rate if they have the used the required skills referred to in classification.

What do I need to do?

  • Check your rates of pay to ensure you are meeting your minimum pay obligations.

  • If you wish to vary any Award terms or currently have an agreement in place which varies the travel allowance or electronic funds transfer, Employsure recommends you get in touch with a workplace relations expert.

  • If you pay above the Award, you should continue to pay employees their ordinary rate when they take paid annual leave.

  • Ensure that you keep track of the types of duties you require your casuals to perform over and above their classification and pay them accordingly.
