Can I hire children in the workplace?

Businesses can generally hire children

in their workplace however there are

some factors that need to be considered.

Each state and territory has its own set

of rules for the employment of children.

These rules may differ in regard to the

minimum age of employment, whether

consent is required from a parent or

guardian and whether there are

restrictions on the hours that they can

actually work. There are also varying

payment obligations depending on the

modern award that applies to your

business.

Please also be mindful to consider any

health and safety risks and you may wish

to speak to your insurer to confirm that

they will cover a child worker in your

workplace. If you are considering

employing a child please phone our

advice team to speak to one of our

advisors who can help you navigate this

process
